  • Add DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) and/or DNS-over-HTTP/3 (DoH3) support

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) and DNS-over-HTTP/3 (DoH3) are relatively new protocols for transmitting DNS queries with security and privacy. Additionally, DoQ and DoH3 also offers other benefits such as improved latency and better error detection. The goal of this proposal is to add DoQ and/or DoH3 support to CoreDNS.

  • Add ACME protocol support for certificate management with DNS

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

CoreDNS is a cloud-native DNS server with a focus on service discovery. While best known as the default DNS server for Kubernetes, CoreDNS is capable of handle many other scenarios within or outside of Kubernetes clusters for make easy infrastructure management. One such case is the certificate management. This project is to provide ACME protocol support so that it is possible to have automatic certificate management through CoreDNS. • External health check and orchestration of CoreDNS in Kubernetes clusters

CommunityBridge · Listed in the official cohort

CoreDNS is the cluster DNS server for Kubernetes and is very much critical for the overall health of the Kubernetes cluster. It is very important to monitoring the health of CoreDNS itself and restarting or repairing any CoreDNS pods that are not behaving correctly. While CoreDNS exposes a health check itself, the health check is not UDP (DNS) based. The existing health check is also launched locally which could be very much different when accessed by other pods remotely. This project intends to build an application that checks CoreDNS health through UDP (DNS) externally, and, restart CoreDNS pods by interacting with Kubernetes API through golang. This is an important project that will greatly improve the overall health of Kubernetes clusters through automation.

  • Autoscaling CoreDNS Nodes on Kubernetes Clusters Through Exposed Metrics

CommunityBridge · Proposed, acceptance not recorded

CoreDNS is Kubernetes' default DNS server for service discovery. As service discovery with DNS is the (often overlooked) critical piece for clusters, it is important to maintain enough capacity for serving the cluster-wide service discovery. CoreDNS already have a metrics plugin with metrics information exposed. In this project, the student will work on the following tasks: Write metrics scraping method to extract the metrics from exposed CoreDNS metrics plugin. Develop a method in transforming collected metrics into desired capacity for CoreDNS nodes. Implement a routine to interact with Kubernetes API to autoscaling CoreDNS node with designed capacity.
