  • Build Karmada Agent Skills

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

Karmada is a multi-cluster orchestration system, but AI coding agents still lack a Karmada-specific skill set. Without a dedicated skill repository, agents often need to search scattered documentation, infer policy structure from incomplete context, and may produce incorrect PropagationPolicy, OverridePolicy, or troubleshooting guidance. This project aims to build the Karmada skill set for AI coding agents. The design follows mature multi-skill repository patterns, with a shared knowledge base, focused workflow skills, and deterministic helpers for schema-sensitive tasks.

  • Enhance Karmada's Quick Start Experience and Incorporate macOS Support

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

The initial interaction for many users with a project often begins with its "Quick Start" guide. Ensuring this guide is of high quality and up-to-date is crucial. Currently, the community offers several quick start methods, including a one-click setup script (hack/local-up-karmada.sh), installation tools such as Helm, karmadactl, and the operator, alongside learning tutorials on Killercoda. Although the community's CI effectively maintains these installation methods, it lacks support for different operating systems, notably macOS. Furthermore, some Killercoda tutorials are outdated and do not reflect the latest features and best practices. This project aims to ease the entry barrier for new users by enhancing the quick start process, ensuring cross-platform compatibility, and updating educational content.

  • OmniControl for Karmada Dashboard

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

We have already implemented management for all types of resources on the control plane and for particial resources on member clusters in the Karmada Dashboard. However, resource management is currently atomic, and the relationships between resources are not presented intuitively. As a result, users may find it difficult to understand and manage relationship across resources. For example: 1. On the control plane, after a user creates a ResourceTemplate, it is not easy to tell which Policy matched that ResourceTemplate and then generated the corresponding ResourceBinding and subsequent Work resources. 2. Across the control plane and member clusters plane, users cannot easily see which member clusters a ResourceTemplate has been propagated to, or the status of the distributed resources in each member cluster. Therefore, we aim to provide a unified management and control capability (OmniControl). From the perspective of ResourceTemplate, users should be able to view the resource’s status on both the control plane and member clusters plane, building on the existing atomic capabilities. This will help users understand the end-to-end status of resources more intuitively and quickly identify and resolve issues when propagation or distribution failures occur.

  • Protect Karmada Component Flags from Unexpected Changes

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

The Karmada project consists of several components (e.g., controller-manager, scheduler, karmada-search, etc.), each accepting various command-line flags for configuration. These flags come from multiple sources: third-party dependencies (e.g., Kubernetes, controller-runtime) and custom flags defined by Karmada itself. During dependency upgrades or internal refactoring, flags can be unexpectedly added, removed, or modified, potentially impacting users who rely on specific configurations. This project aims to create comprehensive documentation and tooling to track and document all flags for Karmada's maintained components, establishing a baseline to detect and manage flag changes carefully.

  • Implement multi-cluster management in the Karmada dashboard

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

The Karmada dashboard has already implemented the management of resources in the control plane. Apart from that, we hope to implement the management of resources in the member cluster: once users add Kubernetes resources and the corresponding policy resources on the control plane, they can switch to the corresponding member cluster seamlessly, check the status of Kubernetes resources in the specific member cluster. Kubernetes dashboard is one of the most popular single-cluster management tools, which uses client-go sdk to communicate with the apiserver to manage resources in the cluster. A great deal of client-go related logic can be extended to muli-cluster easily, due to the karmada-aggregated-apiserver component and the compatibility design between Kubernetes resource and Karmada resoruces. So we hope to combine the Kubernetes dashboard with the karmada-aggregated-apiserver component to implement multi-cluster management in the Karmada dashboard.

  • Karmada Self-Signed Certificate Content Standardization

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

In the existing Karmada architecture, each component should have its own unique certificates to ensure clear identity and security. Best practices dictate that each component's name be used as the Common Name (CN) in its certificate to facilitate identity differentiation. However, currently, all Karmada components share same identical certificate content, leading to confusion and potential security risks. The objective of this project is to enhance the compliance of the Karmada certificate system by ensuring that each component possesses distinct certificates that reflect its identity. This will improve system security, reduce management complexity, and align with industry standards. This project aims to achieve the following standards: Utilize a single CA certificate for the entire Karmada system. Issue individual server certificates for each server component, using the component name as the CN. Issue individual client certificates for each client component, using the component name as the CN, same client can use consistent certificate for different servers.

  • Collect and visualize Karmada metrics

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

Karmada dashboard now supports one-time metric retrieval, but it is difficult to observe the status of multi-clusters with one-time metric retrieval. Therefore, we would like to implement a lightweight metric collection capability to collect Karmada metrics and visualize them on the Karmada dashboard. This will allow cluster administrators to quickly get the status of the clusters and solve problems within the clusters.

  • Enhance Karmada controller-manager and schedule testing coverage

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

Karmada would like to improve the UT coverage of the code to better maintain the quality of the code and reduce the introduction of defects. Increase the UT coverage rate to 50% to 60% (currently, the UT coverage rate is 28.26% ). The entire Karmada repository is a bit large for one project, so we will split it into two projects. The current parts mainly target the karmada-controller-manager and karmada-scheduler components.

  • Certificate Lifecycle Management

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

The Karmada Certificate Lifecycle Management project addresses user challenges in certificate management, focusing on mitigating service disruptions and security risks due to expirations. Key goals include implementing a feature for real-time monitoring of certificates with advance notification for upcoming expirations; creating a comprehensive manual for manual replacement with best practices and visuals; allowing configurable certificate validity during deployment via CLI, Helm charts, and Operator; and designing an automated certificate rotation system to streamline certificate maintenance and ensure continuous security across Karmada environments.

  • Cluster Resource modeling

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

In the scheduling progress, the karmada-scheduler makes decisions as per a bunch of factors, one of the factors is the resource details of the cluster. We don't want to collect and store each node's resources in detail(That's a burden for Karmada to maintain the information), but we want to build a resource model for each cluster.
