A Kubernetes operator to remove stale PVs of failed statefulset replicas
LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort
When using StatefulSets with Local Volumes on Ephemeral Nodes - the StatefulSet Pods will get stuck in pending state when the Node is taken out of the cluster. In such cases, manual steps are required to verify that Node is out of the cluster, remove the PV and PVC and delete the failed StatefulSet replica to trigger the re-creation of a new replica with a new PVC/PV on a new node. This enhancement request is to build a generic operator that is driven by a configuration to automate the manual steps.

Enhance OpenEBS CLI with a sub-command to upgrade Jiva Volumes
LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort
After upgrading the OpenEBS control plane, user/admin is required to upgrade the Jiva Volumes by launching a Kubernetes Job. This enhancement request is to improve the existing OpenEBS CLI jiva sub-commands that will help users with required information to create Kubernetes Jobs, as well as to add a sub-command that will automatically launch the upgrade jobs.

Default Kyverno policies for OpenEBS
LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort
Kyverno is a Kubernetes native policy manager that can be used in place of PodSecurityPolicies. OpenEBS helm charts currently set up PSPs for many of its Storage engines. This project is to convert PSPs into corresponding Kyverno policies. The OpenEBS storage engines also uses a custom admission webhook validator. The scope of the project can extend to replacing the custom validators with Kyverno policies.

Enforcing XFS quotas on OpenEBS hostpath Local PV
LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort
OpenEBS Local PV hostpath is the most simple to use Local PV option available for Kubernetes today. Many of the applications use XFS filesystem to create Local PVs. This project is to implement XFS project quota on the OpenEBS Local PV subdirectory to restrict pods from exceeding the Quota assigned to them via the PVC request.

A easy to use command-line interface (CLI) for OpenEBS
LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort
OpenEBS is completely Kubernetes native and is implemented using microservices. OpenEBS can be installed via kubectl or helm chart and managed via Kubernetes custom resources. To improve the usability of OpenEBS, the proposal is to have a easy to use OpenEBS CLI (similar to kubectl) to perform operations like: upgrade => Upgrade OpenEBS pools and volumes status => Print the readiness of various components, verify prerequisites are met to run openebs pools and volumes. version => Print the OpenEBS version and associated images describe => Describe OpenEBS component status like component/control plane, pools and volumes. create => Create OpenEBS resources delete => Delete OpenEBS resources

Grafana Dashboards for monitoring OpenEBS
LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort
OpenEBS is completely Kubernetes native and is implemented using microservices. OpenEBS can be installed via kubectl or helm chart and managed via Kubernetes custom resources. Each of the OpenEBS components/services expose prometheus metrics. This proposal is to provide Grafana dashboards for monitoring the OpenEBS services.

Multiarch support for OpenEBS Docker images
CommunityBridge · Proposed, acceptance not recorded
OpenEBS Supports automated builds for amd64 and arm64. It will be good to make use of the "docker manifest" command to link different arch images into a single docker repository. This should allow kubernetes nodes to pull in the required container images.

New storage backend using raw disk images
CommunityBridge · Listed in the official cohort
OpenEBS Dynamic Local PV with Hostpath are great for use cases with low latency requirements and running on nodes with few attached drives or block devices. Using bare hostpath has the limitation of enforcing the capacity limits requested by PVC. The proposal is to implement a new type of storage, backed by a raw disk image on the host, that is mounted inside the pod. The storage backend should: have near-zero performance overhead, compared to using local disks be thin-provisioned be able to enforce storage size limits be able to expose volume metrics
