  • Adding Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA) to Headlamp

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

Headlamp is an extensible Kubernetes web UI. Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA) lets workloads request and share devices such as GPUs, network interfaces, and accelerators. Compared with device plugins, DRA supports richer selection, device classes, claim-based allocation, and sharing. This project will add first-class DRA support to Headlamp. It will introduce a Devices section and views for four stable resource.k8s.io/v1 kinds: cluster-scoped DeviceClass and ResourceSlice, and namespaced ResourceClaim and ResourceClaimTemplate. The UI will explain devices, selectors, pools, claims, allocations, placement, consumers, and status without relying on raw YAML. In Kubernetes 1.36, the stable baseline includes these four APIs, prioritized request alternatives, and admin access. Stable capabilities are the project's first priority. All DRA APIs that are beta when the project begins are also in scope, including beta resource kinds and capabilities such as device status, health and binding conditions, granular status authorization, extended-resource allocation, partitionable devices, consumable capacity, and device taints. API discovery and compatibility checks will keep the stable experience working where beta features are unavailable. The work will follow Headlamp conventions for RBAC, accessibility, and internationalization. Links and map visualizations should trace allocation from a workload or claim to its class, devices, slices, and nodes. Metrics integration should show device availability, allocation, and health when a compatible source is available. Advanced features will be prioritized with mentors and the community.

  • Improving Kueue plugin for Headlamp

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

Headlamp is an extensible web UI for Kubernetes. Kueue is a Kubernetes-native queueing system that controls when batch, AI/ML, and high-performance computing workloads are admitted and how they share resources. This project builds on the existing Headlamp Kueue plugin and the previous project's foundational work. That work is expected to provide core resource views, status presentation, related-resource navigation, basic actions, tests, and documentation. This project will improve that foundation and develop advanced features based on user needs and Kueue's state at the start of the term. Potential areas include visualizing workload progress through queueing, admission, execution, and completion; showing relationships among Kueue resources; and improving topology-aware scheduling views. MultiKueue work could help users understand manager and worker clusters, connectivity, workload nomination and routing, and the cluster selected to run a workload. The feature set will be agreed after reviewing the plugin and gathering community feedback. The project will also polish current views, improve accessibility and internationalization, strengthen tests, and update documentation. The goal is a maintainable plugin that helps users and administrators understand and troubleshoot Kueue.

  • Knative eventing and other improvements

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

Knative brings serverless and event‑driven capabilities to Kubernetes, but operators often lack a clear, unified UI for understanding how Knative resources behave at runtime. Headlamp’s existing Knative plugin provides partial support for Knative Serving, but Eventing resources, metrics, accessibility, and internationalization remain incomplete. This mentorship focuses on expanding and polishing Knative support within Headlamp. The mentee will work with React/TypeScript, Kubernetes APIs, and Knative CRDs to build intuitive visualizations, improve resource detail pages, integrate Prometheus metrics, and complete foundational UX work such as accessibility and i18n coverage.

  • Kyverno Policy Visualization & Operational Improvements

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

Headlamp is a CNCF project providing an extensible, user-friendly web UI for Kubernetes clusters, with a growing plugin ecosystem covering CNCF projects like Flux, KEDA, Knative, and Kubeflow. Kyverno is a CNCF graduated Kubernetes-native policy engine that validates, mutates, and generates Kubernetes resources, used across thousands of clusters. The existing Headlamp Kyverno plugin has a solid dashboard with compliance metrics, policy list views, reports, and a violations view - but it is entirely read-only with no visualizations. Operators cannot see which resources a policy affects, why a policy behaves the way it does, or how to troubleshoot a violation. The plugin also has incomplete i18n coverage, no accessibility improvements, missing detail views for CEL-based policies (Kyverno v2), and no Prometheus metrics integration. This project significantly upgrades the existing Headlamp Kyverno plugin by introducing two centerpiece visualizations - a Policy Impact Map to help operators understand which resources a policy affects and why, and an enhanced Violation Drill-Down to troubleshoot exactly which rule failed and how to fix it. The mentee will also integrate Prometheus metrics for real-time policy engine health, complete internationalization (i18n) coverage across all components, add accessibility (a11y) improvements , complete missing detail views for Kyverno v2 CEL policies, and register Kyverno as a Map view source in Headlamp.

  • Velero Backup Management Plugin

LFX Mentorship · Listed in the official cohort

Velero is the most widely adopted CNCF project for Kubernetes backup, restore, and disaster recovery. It manages cluster state and persistent volumes through a set of CRDs (Backups, Restores, Schedules, BackupStorageLocations, VolumeSnapshotLocations). Today, Velero has no graphical interface, operators rely entirely on the velero CLI and kubectl to manage backup operations, inspect failures, and monitor schedule health. Headlamp provides an extensible Kubernetes UI with a growing plugin ecosystem for CNCF projects including Flux, KEDA, Knative, and Kubeflow. This project adds Velero to that ecosystem by building a Headlamp plugin that gives cluster operators a web UI for day-to-day backup management. The mentee will develop a TypeScript/React plugin using the Headlamp plugin SDK that reads and interacts with Velero's CRDs via the Kubernetes API. The plugin will follow existing Headlamp plugin conventions (sidebar registration, list/detail views, status indicators) established by plugins like Flux and Knative.
